Twelve school teams, in the last year groups of Primary and Secondary from different schools and Associations in Vigo and surrounding, will take part in the I School Debate Event, which will be held on the 9th of June at O Castro British School premises in Mos.
During the event, 60 boys and girls aged between 11 and 16 years old, will hold a dialectic battle throughout three discussion rounds, in which topics like the influence of social networks in personal relations, forbidding Zoos or whether or not school homework is a positive thing, will be discussed.
The debate modality in the contest will be academic, meaning that the teams know the subject one week before the event, since in this type of competition, it is taken into account, not only the speech skills, but also the research and evidence found to support each team’s arguments.

Those will be the assessment criteria for the jury board, which will be formed by experts in competition debate and by profesional, leaded by Iván Olmos Ferreiro, national runner-up in debate and world’s runner-up in speeches in Spanish.
The event, organized by WEDU Sociedad&Educación and sponsored by the first British school in Galicia, O Castro British School, tiene por objetivo que los alumnos y alumnas participantes puedan debatir sobre temas de actualidad y relevancia social.
To boost the student’s will to learn, with a special emphasis on the development of learning skills and critical thinking, that lead our students to question everything that surrounds them, promoting the research and the active search for answers are some of the basis of the British method and our compromise with the students and our environment, explains the Head Teacher at O Castro British School, Nathan Parry.
This way, “by organizing the I school Debate event, we intend to help children develop their communication and research skills, encouraging discussion as a tool for dialogue, consensus and search for the truth” explains Silvia Lobato, manager and founder partner of WEDU Sociedad&Educación.
HH Carmelitas, O Castro British School, Colegio Estudio, Escuela Rosalía de Castro, Inventiva Asociación y Aldeas Infantiles are the entities represented by the teams.
A varied activity program for all the family
Throughout the day, the assistants, apart from enjoying the participants’ rhetoric and dialectic skills, will also be able to take part in a program full of activities focused on “offering the families the possibility to know and share with their children the experience of the use of the debate” as explained by WEDU Sociedad & Educación’s manager.
A motivating talk by the World’s runner-up in speech, Iván Olmos Ferreiro, under the title “why being able to speak in front of an audience changes one’s life?”, a parliament debate exhibition, by members of the Debate Retórica de la Universidad de Vigo, and games for the whole family, by leaded by Miudanza Ocio, complete the Event’s programme.
